The Small House Initiative, The Historic Hill District, Easton, Maryland
Located in the heart of America's oldest extant neighborhood of Free Black people, the Small House Initiative represents a socially-responsible prototype for homes that are both affordable and environmentally responsible. Furthermore, these structures are tailored to the specific needs of the elderly and persons who experience disabilities.
The first two prototypes have been approved by the Historic District Commission of Easton. They are single-storey duplex in-fill units, and are designed for optimized cost efficiency, low maintenance, and long term sustainability. Social and environmental justice merge with historic preservation in a happy marriage honoring history and the stringent guidelines unique to the Historic Hill District.
