Annemarie Gardens, Solomons, Maryland

An affiliate of the Smithsonian’s Hirshhorn Museum, Annmarie Garden located on Maryland’s Western Shore is the ideal setting for a comprehensive educational program on the value of wildflower and native grass meadows.

Our mission statement for the masterplan is to educate the public by establishing a template of cutting edge environmental practices. The design goal establishes the meadow area with a large outdoor classroom in the center, where students and visitors learn about how such settings are beneficial in terms of storm water management, promotion of beneficial insects, and general health of an ecosystem.

Our services included the provision of a sustainable landscape masterplan with a focus on improving the adjoining terraces, landscape, gardens and access to the Murray Arts Center. A butterfly pavilion was created east of the Arts Center to introduce a full working greenhouse, home for butterflies, and educational attraction for students and guests.

Beyond beautifying the site, the design prioritizes significant environmental upgrades by creating a stormwater management and grading plan and educating the public via environmental practices, such as recycling, water harvesting, solar energy, swales, rain gardens and biodiversity.
